Called to Serve - Osorno, Chile

Elder Keenan Robertson is serving in the Osorno Chile Mission as a full time missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Elder Robertson left on July 16, 2013 and will return sometime around July of 2015. Missionaries have a limited time to respond to all the E-mails and letters they receive so we will include here some of his letters home so that friends and family can keep up to date on how things are going for him and his ministry among the wonderful people of Chile.

September 29th, 2014

This week wasn't so much of a drunk week more of a hangover week, ha-ha, I lost count of how many people we saw throwing up in the street.  I won't ever drink :)  This week was awesome.  We have really been trying to work with the members.  It was really good and we worked a ton this week!  Everything has been going so good!  In priesthood we got up and asked who could come with us during the week and it worked really well.  I think we all need to realize that the ward and the missionaries aren't two separate things it’s 100% working together or it doesn`t work!  We had a couple of intercambios this week.  One with the zone leaders and one with the office elders.  It was really great.  I was with Elder Powell, my companion from Por Venir.  It was a pretty busy week.

Yesterday after church we got a call from a member that we needed to come over to her house right away so we went over and she told us how she heard a voice or something in her house and it was weird.  When she was talking a feeling of dread and like sickness came over me and the spirit was for sure not there.  It was really weird so we blessed her house.  It was really cool, Elder Marshall did it because he hadn't done it before.  As soon as he started praying all the bad feelings went away and when he finished the spirit was there really strong!

We had a lesson with Juan Carlos and his wife.  We hadn`t shared with them for a really long time.  Now that we are working with the members it should be really good.  We just need investigators!  Ha-ha.  So we will see.

We might go to a volcano next p-day!

Football sounds amazing!  I can`t believe the Utes!  The Colts sound like they are doing well!  I Hope they can keep it together and be one of the better teams again!

I think that’s all for now!  Love you guys tons!

Elder Robertson

I would have loved this back when me an Dallin played war!!!!!  :-)

This was during the ward party.

We had a conference with the area president, Elder Viñas.  Almost half the mission got together!

September 22nd, 2014

This week was good.  It was Chile's Independence day so it was great.  It's like Thanksgiving just for a week.  It was a lot of food.  We ate lots of empanadas and Alfajores.  I learned how to make empanadas so I'm excited!  Alfajores are like two cracker-like things with Manjar in the middle.  Manjar is kinda like caramel but way, way better.  We had a ward activity Thursday and that was really fun!  It was 12:30 to 6:00! Ha-ha.  Pretty much the entire day.  And then we went to our mamita's house the rest of the day and we were over there Friday too.  We couldn`t work those two days.  Saturday we worked... kinda, we tried street contacts for awhile.  But after the 7th or 8th drunk person we stopped.  It's sad how much they drink here.  It was funny, one guy that couldn't even walk wanted to fight us.  Drunk people are so funny.  I don't want to ever try it! Ha-ha.

Church was really good.  Elder Marshall gave a really good talk.  After church we visited some members of the ward that are sick or caring for someone sick so they can`t leave the house.  It was cool to just go visit people and make their day.  This week has been pretty slow.  Not to much has happened with the holidays.  We are trying really hard to work more with the members.  Something that all the stakes and districts in the mission are supposed to be doing is ward council every week.  We have done it two weeks in a row now!  Ha-ha, the first one was 2 and a half hours long!  But this Sunday was only half an hour.  So it was a little bit better.

The fleas are still really bad.  I don`t think there is anything I can do!  Ha-ha.  I`ve tried everything, I even found a Doterra bug repellant but it didn`t work.  I`ll just have to deal with it.  We laid tons of poison down and it's all gone so hopefully the mice are gone, but we will see. :)

I'm excited for this week we can work hard and people should be getting over the hangovers.  Thanks for everything Fam!  Love you guys tons!

p.s. Long live the Colts and Utes! :)

Querido Familia,

Español es mucho mas fácil que Ingles :)  Es chistoso porque puedo pensar en Español y Ingles al mismo tiempo pero es muy difícil a hablar cuando yo esté pensando en los dos.  (Beloved Family, Spanish is much easier than English.  It's funny but I can think in Spanish and English at the same time but it is very difficult to talk when I am thinking in both.)

I think I should be able to throw a good email together in English.  This morning has been a good p-day.  We played football and that was fun.  I love sports so much!  Thats awesome BYU's quarterback is doing so good!  I hope they keep winning!

You should go elk hunting!  It would be cool.  Take some pics!!!!!

Things have been good.  This week was really slow.  It's hard because we don't have investigadores.  We have three people we kinda share with but not regularly so that's been hard but we are working hard and trying to find people.  It was funny because we moved a couch up to the second story in our house.  It was a super tight fit but after an hour we got it ha-ha.  I've been attacked by fleas, so that's been fun! :)  The other day I had 13 bites on my upper right arm!  The shoes I bought are really good.  They were really expensive but I will make them last.  Just keep sending me emails even when mine are lame. :)

Claudio is still doing good!  It's cool to see how much he has changed.  We have a couple other people coming back to church so that's been good.

That's awesome with the football game!  You got to see Elder Holland?!  Maybe they could give him some helmets and pads!  Then they`d win for sure!  Trevor is so awesome!  I hope he goes on a mission.

Thanks for the scripture, that's a good one!  It's one of my favorite chapters.  This morning for studies I read Moroni 10 and highlighted everything he invites or exhorts us to do!  It was a ton!  It's an awesome chapter.

Well thats all for now! Take care!!!!!!!  Try to get Trevor's email if you can and tell him I'm going to email him.

This is our district minus the office elders.

I just think it's cool!!!

We had a family night with Fam. Lepin Saturday, it was super good.  They have a daughter in Santiago on a mission.  Lots of food!  This week is 18 I'm excited!!!!!! :)

We finally finished chopping wood!  It was a ton but it was good!  We did it for family Osorio.  I like chopping wood a ton.  It's a bummer it's summer soon.  I won`t be chopping too much.

Thanks for your emails!  They were fantastic.  This week was good.  We have some investigators and we are always looking for more.  There is one guy named Claudio who has been inactive for like 10 years but he has been coming to church the last few weeks.  So that's been cool to see.

I was thinking the other day and it would be cool if the next package you send you could put Goldfish and Captain Crunch! :)  Just a wee bit :)
I bought shoes last week.  They seem really nice so I hope they last really long!

Football is awesome! :)  Broncos got lucky :)  I hope Peyton Manning wins a super bowl before he retires!

The weather has been really cold and rainy but it's kinda warming up slowly but surely.  Me and Elder Marshall are getting along really well.  It's been a good 6 weeks.  Cambios are this week and we are staying together for another cambio.  6 more weeks and he is done with training!  It's been really fun, we have been trying to really talk to everyone!  It has been really good!

Sorry my emails aren`t better.  This week I'm going to make a list of all the cool stuff that happens so I can write about all that!

Love you tons!

I ate a three stack Oreo and I found a minion hat from Despicable Me:)

September 1st, 2014

This week has been really good! We have been working hard and it's awesome to be a missionary.  Our p-day changed to Monday so that's why I didn't write Saturday.

Our house has some major rat problems so we put some poison down, hopefully that works.  We haven`t seen or heard any but there is mouse poop all over the place.  We are cleaning everything super good and we have all our food on a high table in the middle of the room, haha, so they can´t get up.  So we will see how that goes.  We have been talking to some members and they say that pretty much everywhere is infested with rats.... haha so we will see what happens.

We have had some really good lessons with Juan Carlos.  He is progressing really well.  They said whenever we pass by they can feel the spirit.  And then we leave and the good feelings leave!  It's frustrating.  We have found some really cool people this week so it will be good to see what happens.  The work is going forward.  It's really cool because everything is changing with a new mission president and the church leaders are starting to get really excited.  We are trying really hard to work more with the members and it has been really good.

Your emails were great.  Football sounds awesome!  Thanks dad.  Peyton Manning is my favorite player of all time.  And Dallin looks like a stud!!  Hopefully that goes really well for him.  He`d make a good firefighter.  I`ve seen a couple of house fires in my time here and its always the coolest thing watching the firemen!  I hope everything goes well!

We are working a lot with Gonzalo(mamitas son).  He is really cool.  We are working with him so it's good.  We have a family night with mamitas tonight so that should be good.

I hear from Aaron and Nate every once in a while, they are doing good.  It's the coolest thing ever!  Thiago went on a mission!!!!!  He is in Boston speaking Portuguese.

It was kinda warming up here but today its raining!  I am excited though, it's going to be summer soon! Cambios are this week but we shouldn`t change because Elder Marshall is in training.  Time is going by so fast!  I can`t believe it.  Haha, and I don´t want to believe it!

Im so glad everything is going good!  I love you guys so much!
¡Que estén muy bien!

Love,
Elder Robertson
