Called to Serve - Osorno, Chile

Elder Keenan Robertson is serving in the Osorno Chile Mission as a full time missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Elder Robertson left on July 16, 2013 and will return sometime around July of 2015. Missionaries have a limited time to respond to all the E-mails and letters they receive so we will include here some of his letters home so that friends and family can keep up to date on how things are going for him and his ministry among the wonderful people of Chile.

May 26, 2014

My week was good.  We have found some new people and have just about knocked all the doors in Porvenir:) haha Jorge and Lila are progressing really good but still haven't come to church!!  This Wednesday we are going to have a lesson with them in the church so they can be more comfortable with it.

Elder Cariqueo is my companion.  I would send a picture but it doesn´t work :( his camera doesn´t work también.  He is awesome, he is from Santiago and is almost 24!  He is an old fart!  He is a good Elder.  We get along good.  He is a funny kid! haha

I'm glad the doctors went good!  It's awesome everything is done!  That is awesome Deanna is engaged!  I haven´t emailed her in forever.  So her fiancee doesn't have anything to worry about! haha :)  Yea, I knew Paige! I didn't know she was mormon... That's awesome she is going on a misión!

Seems like the ward is growing really good!  Sounds like lots of people are moving in!

Dad, it would seem that the Young men need some palos!  Get on them for that one.  Tell them to start doing things on their own now before I get back and just make them do it! haha Just kidding.  Just tell them it's a lot easier to have good habits before the misión and not wait until the MTC :)

Not much happened this week.  We are sharing a lot with Jorge and Lila but don´t have too many other strong investigators!  I JUST REMEMBERED something hilarious, we shared with this guy in the army and he thinks the church was formed by the government to unite the world!  hahaha  It was the funniest thing I've ever heard in my life!  He is a funny guy.  We are working a lot with menos activas so that is really good.  We had a menos activa come to church who hasn't come in years!  It was really cool.

El Albedrio (freedom of choice)! It's something I have learned really well on the mission.  Everyone has it and all I can do is work my hardest, pray, and rely on the Lord.  Then they have to decide.

Well I can´t really think of anything else.  We did a lot of walking this week!

This week our zone leaders are going to come and we are going to do splits so that should be fun!  Something new!!!!! haha Love you guys tons!

It was great talking to you guys!  That was really neat.  Haha next time we talk I will have 6 months left in the mission!  That's crazy to think about!  I like the misión a ton I love the south of Chile!  Not much has happened since we talked.  Friday we taught a lot and it was really awesome.  Saturday we had 5 citas planned with people and every single one fell through!  That's always frustrating!  But Sunday was good. There were 21 people but still no investigators.  It was crazy, there wasn't even that many priesthood holders that was weird!  Aside from us, there were 3 priesthood holders!

Right before church started President came up and asked if I could give a talk!  Haha, so I gave a talk, that was fun.  I talked about obedience and the gospel of Jesus Christ.  It was ok.

Thats awesome dad that you are taking the summer off!  That will be good!  Do you have any plans or things to do over the summer?  That's weird they are cutting back on summer school!  It's kinda important for some people!

Thats awesome you all had an awesome time for mothers day!  How was your Birthday, dad!?  How old are you agian? 50 or 60?  Just kidding, just kidding!  43 or 44? Sorry I never wrote anything for your birthday!  I forgot what day it was!  I knew it was the beginning of May :)

This week was good!  The temperatura is really cold!  Every morning we wake up and everything outside is frozen!!  But it's good!

We had a really awesome lesson with Jorge and Lila, that was really cool!  They said they will go to church when they feel ready.  Sometimes we just need to show our faith and trust in God!  Oh well we are going to keep working with them.

Glad everything is good!  Thats all for now Folks! :) haha I love you guys a ton you are the best family ever!!!!!!!!!!

May 14, 2014

We had a great visit with Keenan via Skype from Por Venir, Chile.  He said that he is doing great and loving the work and the people, not so much the food.  He talked about his work with investigators and less active members.  He doesn't anticipate being in Por Venir for more than a couple more months.  It is very remote but fairly modern.  He talked about wild Llamas and Penguins.  He laughed when we told him it was 75 degrees here, and said that he hasn't felt 75 degrees in many months even though it is the end of summer there.  The nights are getting long, he says it is dark by 5:30 pm and the sun comes up after 8:00 am.  In a couple of months the days will only be about 7 hours long.

He bore his testimony for everyone in Spanish so here it is below.  He loves getting emails and letters/cards.  We are very proud of him and excited that he is doing so well.

May 5, 2014

Hey Fam!
Ok so first thing real quick. It snowed this morning! Ha-ha.  We were studying and it had been raining/slushing and the windows were pretty fogged up so you couldn´t see very well but it looked kinda like it was snowing so we ran outside and took some pics and videos!  Today is freezing cold!  Earlier we went to a museum...? Museo :) and it was pretty cool just really small!

Second thing!  Cambios!!!!!!  Crazy right?  It’s crazy!  This last month and a half went by super-fast!  I don´t remember April at all!  Elder Powell is going to Punta Arenas to be district leader and I’m getting a Chileno companion!  I think he is from my group but not sure and I can´t remember his name but I’ll be with him when we Skype.  Another cool thing is they are splitting the zone down here so there will be two zones in Punta Arenas!  Elder Parsons, my trainer, will be my zone leader!!  It will be cool to see him for a little bit.

Third Skype!  So with cambios we are going to Punta Arenas.  We leave tomorrow at 2 but the thing is Sunday is stake conference.  So we might stay in Punta Arenas until next Tuesday!  So it might be pretty crazy.  But nobody knows about stake conference here in the branch so if they have church we will go to church here so we would come back Thursday!  So pretty confusing right?  Yeah I’m confused too so we will see what happens.

So we have started sharing with the family that contacted us in the car the other day.  The dad’s name is Jorge and his wife is Lila and they have two kids, Jorge (7) and Natali (3 or 4) they are super cool.  They didn´t come to church this week because Natali was super sick so that was a bummer but they are really awesome and have been reading the Book of Mormon!  It’s awesome!  We have lots of people we are working with so I’m really excited about this next cambio we should have some baptisms!!

I talked to Aaron the other day and he got transferred to Martinique.  I don´t know if I spelled that right but it looks pretty tropical and awesome!

This week was pretty hard in the beginning but it ended really well!  Don´t worry about the packages, I’m doing ok! :)  If you haven´t sent it already I want a Liahona from conference if you could send me one! :) in English. :) Ha-ha

I can´t really think of anything else this week.  I’m glad everything is going better at home!  DALLIN HAS A NEW JOB??????  Ellie said something about it but I don´t know anything about this! Ha-ha

Love you guys a ton! :)

See you Sunday!

April 31, 2014

So I'm going to keep this short.  I didn't email Monday because we went to THE PENGUINS today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  It was super cool.  We left early this morning and it was a two hour bus drive on this tiny little shuttle thing.  It was a tiny little dirt road that went out to nowhere!  Ha-ha the penguins are literally out in the middle of nowhere!  We were there all day and just barely got back!

It was a beautiful drive and there were lots of wild Llamas! "What a llama?? He's supposed to be dead!"  I didn't get a picture because we were going too fast.  So we got there and there were penguins.  At first there weren't too many because they are out in the ocean feeding but, by the end, there were a ton (the brown ones are babies).  We couldn't get close because there was a river and then the penguins and then the ocean!  It was really awesome!  I took some super awesome videos but I can't send those over email.  They were super cool and really pretty; they have some pretty big lungs and they can sure make wierd loud noises!

The work is really good here in Por Venir not much new has happened.  I'm glad all of you are doing better, kinda!  Just hang in there, everything will work out.  My time is short today so sorry this isn't longer.  (As far as a package goes), maybe a packet of microwave popcorn, the the butteriest you can find! :) ha-ha

The National Park was pretty funny but the penguinos were awesome!

Love you guys a ton!!!!!!!!!
